How well does the Dyson V10 clean?
The main question for our detailed Dyson V10 Cyclone Absolute review is, as always, whether its cleaning performance is as good as the manufacturer states.
To do this, we spread various kinds of dirt on different floor types and cleaned them with the V10 at the maximum suction level. We used the standard electric brush as an attachment.
The Dyson V10's suction power was convincing all the way through.
Suction test on hard floors
First, we spread oat flakes, sand and rice on laminate. The V10 caught us off-guard because it sucked up all types of dirt effortlessly.
There were only barely visible residues of the sand. In the measurable term: the V10 still vacuumed 97% of the sand. It probably left behind those 3 % residues because the sand was a bit damp and very stubborn.
Cleaning test on short carpet
The Dyson V10 also came out with flying colours when we put it to the test on short-pile carpets.
It didn’t have any problems and effortlessly removed all the dirt that we had spread.
Suction power on the long pile carpet
Vacuums have a harder time cleaning long pile carpets because the dirt disappears in those carpets’ depth.
It’s a different story with the Dyson V10. We were able to remove every single bit of dirt, even on the long-pile carpet.
From all suction modes, the medium power mode works best on the long-pile carpet.
Dyson V10 – How is the suction performance in everyday use?
Does our cleaning test show realistic results?
Well, we have to admit that our tests include tough challenges for the Dyson V10 Absolute. We want to see where it reaches its limits.
But what about the cleaning performance in everyday life? Even in everyday life, there are unique challenges that a cordless vacuum cleaner has to master.
After three weeks of continuous use, we can say that the Dyson V10 Absolute is a blessing in the household.
During this time (despite having two children in the household), there wasn’t a single type of dirt that the Dyson V10 Absolute couldn't handle. Only the results of the Dyson V11 Absolute review were more impressive.

Long hairs and pet hair are often challenging for cordless vacuum cleaners. They wrap themselves around the roller and block it at some point. However, this rarely happened with the Dyson V10, and the roller didn’t block at all.
Dyson v10 accessories - which brush is for what?
The manufacturer includes all sorts of practical accessories with each cordless vacuum cleaner, also for our 2020 Dyson V10 review.
The key question is: which cleaner head is for what and do I even need all of them?
The included accessories differ from model to model. It’s usually the main difference between the models.
Dyson offers the V10 in three different versions:
- Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute
- Dyson Cyclone V10 Animal
- Dyson Cyclone V10 Motorhead
We have tested the Dyson V10 Cyclone Absolute and put together an overview of the accessories that come with it and what they are suitable for.
- Suction tube: As always, the suction tube comes in striking metallic colours and adds to the futuristic style of the Dyson V10. It’s made of extremely lightweight and super strong metal.
- Dyson V10 Direct Drive Electric Brush: You can use the main roller for any type of floor.
The brush rotates by the power of its own small motor, which sits directly on the brush. This contributes enormously to the excellent suction power.
The cordless vacuum cleaner also picks up dirt across the entire width of the brush. Barely any hairs wrap themselves around the roller.
- Dyson V10 electric brush with soft roller: This roller has become popular in the UK with Dyson's Fluffy models. It is particularly suitable for all types of hard floors.
The soft roller sucks up even larger pieces and won’t scatter them across the room.
- Mini electric brush: We recommend this attachment especially for cleaning the car or upholstery.
- Combination tool: This cleaning head is perfect for vacuuming furniture, books or pictures. You can retract the brush with a simple handle and vacuum with the hard plastic end, making it very versatile and efficient.
- Crevice tool: A classic vacuum nozzle. It’s excellent for cleaning the crevices and creases between car seats or the couch.
- Quick Release Extra-soft brush: The new extra-soft brush is a live-safer for all those who want to clean sensitive surfaces. The soft bristles and the pad on the dusting brush’s underside protect even the most sensitive surfaces from scratches.
- Storage and charging station: The docking station from Dyson is ingenious. It attaches the Dyson V10 to the wall and saves a lot of space.
- Charger: You can easily connect the matching power supply unit to the wall mount. The Dyson V10 automatically charges when it’s attached to the mount.
You can remove each of these attachments at the touch of a button and reinstall them just as quickly.
Dyson V10 - Comparison of the three V10 models
While researching for our Dyson V10 review, we found out that there are three different models:
- V10 Absolute
- V10 Animal
- V10 Motorhead
That brings up the questions:
What are the differences between the three models, and which model works best for me?
The following table shows the differences between the Dyson v10 Absolute, Animal and Motorhead models.
Three models of the Dyson Cyclone V10:
|V10 Absolute||V10 Animal||V10 Motorhead|
|Cleaning Modes||3 (1,2,max)||3 (1,2,max)||3 (1,2,max)|
|Suction Power||151 air watts||151 air watts||151 air watts|
|Battery Life||approx. 50 min||approx. 50 min||approx. 50 min|
|Dirt Container Capacity||0.76 l||0.76 l||0.54 l|
|Weight||2.6 kg (5.7 lbs)||2.6 kg (5.7 lbs)||2.5 kg (5.5 lbs)|
|Scope of Delivery||8||7||5|
Which Dyson v10 model should you buy?
After testing the Dyson V10 Absolute, we came to the following conclusion: the more attachments, the better!
The accessories are very well thought-out. You can buy the individual components, but then they’ll cost more.
That’s why we’d recommend the Dyson V10 Cyclone Absolute, as the delivery scope is more extensive. The included soft roller is very impressive and useful for all those who have to clean many hard floors.
We won’t give the Dyson V10 Motorhead a purchase recommendation because you’d have significant limitations with this model and its relatively small delivery scope.
How easy is it to use the Dyson V10?
The Dyson V10 cordless vacuum is very user-friendly. The device comes in a large cardboard box. We were also delighted that they didn’t use any plastic for the packaging of the individual elements.
Once you unpack the parts and give the vacuum battery a full charge (about 3.5 hours for the first time), you’re good to go. No cables, no bags, just attach the accessories you need and start vacuuming.
When you set it up and use it, you can tell that Dyson is all about ease of use.
You can quickly convert the Dyson V10 from a stick vacuum to a hand vacuum with just a few movements. You just have to press one of the plug-in system’s red buttons to remove or attach the accessories.
What’s the battery runtime of the Dyson V10 Cyclone Absolute?
Well, well, well.. the Dyson V10 and its battery life. For years, it was the bottleneck of cordless vacuum cleaners. There was always that anxious voice in our head: Is the battery runtime long enough to vacuum my entire flat? Not without reason do we ask that and similar questions.
That’s why Dyson UK focuses on the development of the battery and the runtime of each model.
By adding level 1 - which is relatively weak -, Dyson scores a long battery runtime of 50 minutes with its new cordless vacuum cleaner.
That's 10 minutes less than the manufacturer states, but it's still a considerable step in the right direction.
We consider it a significant enrichment for the cordless vacuum cleaner since the 14 air watts of level 1 are often sufficient.
Battery runtime in the individual suction levels
|Suction Level||Battery Runtime in Minutes||Suction Power in Airwatt AW|
|Level 1||approx. 50 min||14 AW|
|Level 2||approx. 30 min||35 AW|
|Max||approx. 9 min||151 AW|
In Max mode, the battery lasts only about 9 minutes. However, the suction power in this mode is so strong that you’ll only need it for really stubborn dirt.
In medium mode, the battery runtime of the Dyson V10 is about 30 minutes. This cleaning mode was our top choice during our review. We were able to vacuum 100 to 120 square metres at a stretch in medium mode.
The Dyson has an excellent performance with these battery runtimes.
How loud is the cordless vacuum cleaner?
What’s the volume of the Dyson? Is the volume of the suction power in Max mode unbearable?
We did a soundcheck with the Dyson V10 in dB.
In Max mode, we hit 80 dB. We can’t call that quiet, but it’s still negligible. The volume is acceptable, especially if you bear in mind what a powerful suction you get for it.
Volume of the Dyson V10
|Suction Level||Volume in dB|
|Level Max||approx. 80 dB|
|Level 2||approx. 75 dB|
|Level 1||approx. 73 dB|
The new Dyson V10: Manoeuvrability and flexibility
The Dyson V10 is very flexible in movement. Due to the joint between the roller and the tube, you’ll almost get a right angle in curves. You can effortlessly move it through the room.
You can also lay it flat on the floor in an almost 180-degree angle. That makes it easier to vacuum under higher furniture such as beds or cupboards.
Unlike many other manufacturers, Dyson UK has built in the motor directly on the handle and not on the roller’s bottom. That also contributes to an easier vacuuming of the dust under the furniture.
Is the Dyson V10 worth its money?
Dyson is known for its high-quality products, and they are always a bit more expensive than the others.
Is it still worth buying the Dyson V10?
We think so!
The Dyson V10 is a good investment. You get the best cleaning performance, excellent service, and a futuristic design for the higher price.
The Dyson V10 is currently available in different versions. These differ mainly in features, not in performance:
We tested the Dyson V10 Absolute and were very satisfied with the included accessories.
The Dyson V10 Absolute’s recommended price in online shops (usually cheaper than in shops) is now much lower.
