With cordless vacuums, you’ll get a taste of the future. Nobody wants to waste time dragging cables around and changing sockets all the time.
Dyson currently dominates the cordless vacuum cleaner market in the UK, but is there competition on the horizon?
The German manufacturer Miele throws its hat into the ring now with its first cordless vacuum cleaner, the Miele Triflex HX1.
We want to show you what the new Triflex HX1 cordless vacuum cleaner brings to the table. We put it through its paces to test whether it’s on par with the German premium manufacturer or not.
For this purpose, we got hold of the Miele Triflex HX1 in the "Cat&Dog" version.
We all know what’s the most important thing about a vacuum: it’s got to suck up the dirt.
We put the HX1 through our extensive test in our “vacuum arena”, as we do with all devices that we get a hold of.
We tested all the best cordless vacuum cleaners ?
We challenge Miele's premium battery-powered vacuum cleaner with three kinds of dirt on three different surfaces.
We spread sand, oat flakes and red lentils on laminate, short and long carpet and vacuum it at the maximum level.
The test results speak for themselves:
The HX1 came out with flying colours in our test on laminate. Here, it effortlessly sucked up everything we threw at it. Even the joints were clean.
Here the Triflex HX1 cordless vacuum cleaner vacuumed its way into the top ranks of premium models, too.
It removed lentils and oat flakes without any problems.
It managed to remove only 87 % of the sand though, which shows that there’s still some room for improvement.
Nevertheless, it’s an outstanding result.
Last but not least, we tested the Miele Triflex HX1 on the long-pile carpet.
Cordless vacuums often have a hard time cleaning these carpets because the suction power is not sufficient.
But not the Triflex.
It removed over 90% of lentils and oat flakes and just under 80% of the sand.
That’s still a decent result.
In our test area, the HX1 won our hearts with its suction power. But what if you can’t vacuum in the turbo power setting all the time, like in everyday life?
In regular everyday use, the HX1 left nothing to be desired.
Whether it’s dust, dirt or hair, or something that the kids or the cat brought into the household, Miele's cordless vacuum kept its promise.
The accessories are essential for cordless vacuum cleaners because the delivery scope determines how versatile it is in use.
The accessories of the Trilfex HX1 are well-thought-out, you will see that in our review.
The large electric brush is the “crown jewel” of the accessory?.
It’s suitable for cleaning all floor types from hard floors to carpets.
The LED lighting that illuminates the area in front of the vacuum is a particularly nice feature. That way you won’t miss a single grain of dirt.
Thanks to its relatively hard bristles, it picks up stubborn dirt and hair well.
This attachment is larger than average. The brush inside the housing alone is 25 cm (9.8 inches) wide. With this, you can vacuum large areas quickly.
It’s easy to remove the roller via an opening on the side. Then you can clean it properly.
The brush automatically adjusts its suction power to the surface. This increases the suction power and extends the battery life enormously.
The small electronic brush is an extra feature of the Cat & Dog version.
It works very well when removing hair from upholstered furniture or vacuuming car seats
There’s a slight drawback though: you can’t remove the brush for cleaning.
The fact that you can hang the vacuum on the wall saves a lot of space when storing it. That’s not the case with conventional corded vacuums.
But the docking station is not only suitable for storing...
...Thanks to an ingenious system, you can attach the charger so that you only have to hook the Miele into the wall bracket for charging.
The crevice nozzle is a vital cleaner head. With it, you can vacuum in every nook and crack.
We all know that dirt feels very comfortable on the sofa between the cushions, where it’s hard to reach...
...That won’t be an issue anymore with the crevice tool!
This one makes dusting so much easier in your home.
Whether it’s furniture or pictures...
...simply attach the dusting brush, and say goodbye to all that dust.
That’s a rather complicated and technical name for a simple upholstery brush.
The name says it all - you can vacuum the upholstery with it.
In our opinion, this gadget’s somewhat redundant in the Cat&Dog version since they included the mini electric brush already. However, this one’s much more efficient.
Miele offers many different versions of the Triflex HX1.
However, the six different models differ neither in suction power nor handling or any other point.
The main difference is in the delivery scope.
First, we’ll present the variants that differ the most. At the end of this review, you can also find a table in which we compare the other variants.
In the overview (see below) you can see which model comes with which accessories.
Model | Triflex HX1 Pro | Triflex HX1 | Triflex HX1 Cat & Dog |
Three-part accessories | Integrated wall bracket | Integrated wall bracket | Integrated wall bracket |
Crevice nozzle | Yes | Yes | Yes |

Extra battery | Yes | X | X |
The Cat & Dog and Pro version come with the electronic brush with light.
The standard version is a somewhat stripped-down version without LED lights and a few other things.
In our opinion, the Cat & Dog version wins the race because it has an additional small electric brush for the upholstered furniture. We like this one better than the extra battery that comes with the Pro version.
Since the large electric brush improves the suction power enormously, we wouldn’t recommend the standard version. It’s worth to dig a little deeper into your pocket here.
The Pro version is worthwhile for those who have to vacuum for a long time at a stretch. You have to decide for yourself whether this is worth an extra 100 pounds.
The Cat & Dog version includes all essential accessories. The small electric brush is a nice extra and comes in very handy when cleaning smaller areas in the car or upholstery.
From a price-performance point of view, we give out a clear recommendation for the Cat & Dog variant, if you’re prepared to pay the price.
In our review we show you the most important features of the Miele Trilfex HX1
Miele's vacuum cleaner has a sophisticated interplay of motor and filters.
First, it sorts out the coarse dirt with its single-stage cyclone system.
After that, the pre-filter collects fine dirt.
Then it’s the HEPA filter’s turn: it removes the smallest particles.
This is especially good for allergy sufferers.
In the end, the motor pre-filter protects the motor itself. However, the air has already been cleaned to such an extent that no more dirt reaches this filter anymore.
The new Triflex has three suction levels with different suction power. At the minimum level, the battery-powered vacuum cleaner has a runtime of 34 minutes.
We vacuumed mostly in the second cleaning mode during our test. The ratio between runtime and suction power of this level worked well for us.
In the upper two stages, the suction power also adapts to the respective surface. That optimises the cleaning process, which is a great advantage!
The length of the battery life depends on various factors: Which suction level you’re using for cleaning, which accessory is attached and so on.
An absolute novelty on the new Miele Triflex HX1 is its removable battery.
You can easily remove the battery of the Triflex and replace it with a charged battery, just like you’re used to from cordless drills.
You can also buy the exchangeable batteries afterwards.
Miele has installed three LED lights on the power unit so you can see the battery status. The fewer LEDs are lit, the emptier the battery.
You’ll know that the battery has about 10% left if only one LED is lit.
Power Setting | Battery Runtime in Minutes |
Level 1 (Min) | 34 minutes |
Level 2 | 22 minutes |
Level 3 (Max) | 17 minutes |
Once the battery is empty, it takes about three and a half hours to charge it.
Starting up the vacuum cleaner is super easy. Once it’s fully charged for the first time, you can start vacuuming straight away.
You only have to make one decision: which power mode you want to use.
The assembly is self-explanatory.
With the push of a button, you can plug-out the elements. To assemble, you just have to put the parts together.
Thanks to the extra wheels on the brush, the Miele Triflex is easy to move around. You can easily navigate the vacuum.
It feels quite heavy when you vacuum for longer periods.
Therefore, it’s better to convert the cordless vacuum cleaner so that the centre of gravity is at the bottom (reach mode) for large areas.
The self-standing function is also practical. You can just put the device somewhere and won’t have to bend down to pick it up again.
With each day, life’s getting smarter and smarter. More and more houses turn into smart homes. Vacuum hoovers clean the floors of many of these already.
Nevertheless, we’d recommend that you vacuum the floor regularly too.
Robot vacuum cleaners often have troubles with reaching the corners. That’s where the cordless stick vacuum comes in handy.
You can reach every corner with the cordless vacuum from Miele.
We were pleasantly surprised by the volume of the HX1: we measured only 70 dB. With that, it belongs to the quieter ones of its kind. You can vacuum without ear protectors.
Suction Level | Volume in dB |
Level 3 | 72 dB |
Level 2 | 72 dB |
Level 1 | 70 dB |
The maintenance tasks at Triflex include only:
The dirt container has a capacity of 500 ml. That’s sufficient for thorough cleaning of a one-family household. However, it wouldn’t hurt if it was a little bigger.
If you want to empty the dirt container, simply turn the lid to remove the entire container. Then you can take it to the dustbin.
Turn the lid again to open the container, and then you can empty it.
It’s a great plus that you don't have to take the whole vacuum to the dustbin.
If hair or other dirt gets tangled in the brush, you can simply remove the brush from the side and remove the dirt.
Miele states that the HEPA filter is maintenance-free.
But you should remove it and briefly tap it out from time to time so that it won’t clog. Just take it out when you remove the dirt container.
It’s easy peasy to remove the filter once you get the hang of it.
According to the manufacturer, the motor pre-filter lasts a lifetime and doesn’t need to be cleaned. It serves as protection for the engine for the worst-case scenario.
We already mentioned that the battery is very easy to replace compared to other vacuums. Simply remove it at the touch of a button and put in a new battery.
That scored an extra point for sustainability from us.
Regarding the price, the popular Triflex HX1 from Miele is in the upper price segment. That doesn’t really surprise us since it’s a top German brand.
But there’s no significant price difference between Miele and other premium manufacturers in the industry.
The HX1 is a little heavier than others. However, this is not a problem since it’s super easy to convert it into range mode.
In our review, Miele's first "Made in Germany" cordless vacuum cleaner did not only meet our expectations. It even exceeded some of them.
The premium cordless vacuum cleaner brings a powerful suction, relatively low volume and excellent workmanship to the table.
In our tests, it left the floor spotless.
It’s particularly suitable for pet lovers. Especially when it comes to vacuuming pet hair, the Cat & Dog model’s name didn’t promise too much.
The 3-in-1 function of the Miele cordless vacuum cleaner is another great advantage. Each of these modes is very useful. You’re basically spoilt for choice, in the best way there is.
So, if you're looking for a premium cordless vacuum, you've come to the right place. The Miele Triflex HX1 proved to be a real game-changer for cleaning at home in our tests.
