Our favourite

Roborock S8 Pro Ultra

Experience top-tier cleaning with the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra, boasting the standout Ultra Station.

Enhanced automation and quality set this model apart from its predecessor, the S7 series.

The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra makes a bold promise: "Forget cleaning - really!" and it does a good job living up to that.

This robot cleaner is packed with top-notch features, with the Ultra Station being the star. ⭐️

This handy station does four things for you:

  • Cleans the mop
  • Dries the mop
  • Empties the mobile dust tank
  • Refills the water tank

functions of the ultra station

Essentially, it makes daily cleaning mostly hands-off. ✋🏻

It's evident that the makers have taken the best parts of their older models and added some neat improvements.

Highlights include a new way to dry the mop, an improved brush system, better obstacle detection, and two mop settings for a thorough clean.

This model feels more like a polished version of the previous ones rather than a brand-new invention.

During our tests, its wiping function worked extremely well. 🧽

Its strong suction was commendable too.

The device also showcased good navigation skills, especially in obstacle detection.

On the downside, its side brush could be better on carpets and edges, and the use of throwaway dust bags seems a bit old-fashioned.

Plus, it's on the pricier side. 🤑

So, if you're after the latest in robot cleaning and don't mind the cost, this is a great pick.

But if you're looking to save a bit, considering the slightly older S7 series might be a good idea.

Ecovacs Deebot X1 OMNI

Luxury Robot Vacuum-Mop Hybrid (designed by Jacob Jensen)

Numerous premium features leave nothing to be desired with this Ecovacs model. 🎉

At first glance, you immediately notice the robot’s unique and attractive design. 👀

And this is no coincidence because Jacob Jensen (famous Danish industrial design studio) is responsible for its look.

Top features of the Deebot X1 OMNI

But it's not just the look of the premium vacuum mopping robot that is impressive. The Ecovacs Deebot X1 OMNI is packed with top features:

  • Emptying station
  • Rotating mopping pads
  • Washing station for the mop cloths
  • Obstacle detection
  • Integrated voice assistant ("Ok Yiko")
  • …and more!

However, the numerous functions come at a price: this luxury robot is certainly not for bargain hunters... 💸

Mopping ability

The Ecovacs Deebot X1 Omni has many highlights. One of them is its mopping capabilities. 💧

Let’s have a look at the role the station plays in the cleaning process.

After a predetermined interval (10, 15 or 25 minutes), the two mopping pads are wrung out and rinsed at the station.

The Ecovacs Deebot X1 OMNI clean and dirty water tanks are held up.

The benefit here is that your floors are always cleaned with freshly rinsed mops. The collected dirt ends up in the dirty water tank (and not on your floors).

Furthermore, the mobile water tank is refilled at the multifunction station.

So you are spared this (annoying) task as well.

The two mopping pads rotate in opposite directions, creating a "scrubbing effect". This results in a more thorough cleaning of your home. 🧼

And don't forget: when the job is done, the two pads are blown dry at the station (with hot air). 🍃

The two Ecovacs Deebot X1 OMNI mopping pads are seen from below.

All these functions together mean that the wet floor cleaning process runs almost completely independently, so you can sit back and relax. 🏖️

And the mopping performance also impressed us. 👇

(Even if stubborn, dried-in stains take a bit more effort).

The combination of an impressive mopping ability and a huge range of other premium features makes the Deebot X1 a compelling option.

Although that’s only if you have the necessary funds: because the price will set you back a bit... 💸

Automatic hoovers are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason. Because consumers can no longer deny the wealth of advantages they bring.

Below, we’ve summarised the most important advantages for you.

Time saving and convenience

Who doesn't dream of having a hard-working robot to do all the household cleaning for you? Thoroughly, reliably and without any need for you to pitch in?

The vacuum robots can't do everything yet, but they can do a lot. 💪

You come home from work, et voilà, the entire flat is vacuumed.

No need to worry about your floors any more. You can devote your valuable time to the finer things in life.

And let's face it, vacuuming floors is not one of those things.

So with the help of these little robots, housework doesn’t have to be such a drag any more!

Give your back a break

Vacuuming is not exactly good for your back and joints. Dragging a heavy hoover across your home or crawling under beds on your hands and knees can put extreme strain on your back and joints.

You can avoid all that as the proud owner of a robot vacuum cleaner. These little household helpers do their job reliably and without any need for you to take part.

These hard-working household helpers provide enormous relief for elderly people or people with limited mobility in particular.

Cleaning in your absence

The absolute genius of a robot vacuum cleaner is that it does the floor cleaning even when you’re not around!

You no longer have to be bothered by the annoying hoover humming noise:

  • Simply open the smartphone app,
  • And let the robot do the work in your absence.

Or even more practical: Create a weekly cleaning schedule:

Setting the cleaning schedule in a robot vacuum cleaner mobile app.

Then your home will be cleaned at fixed times (e.g. while you are at work).

Come home from a hard day's work and enjoy your freshly vacuumed (and mopped) home. 🙌

Great results on hard floors and short-pile carpets

The robot vacuum cleaner market has developed rapidly in recent years. Most of today's good models have one thing in common: all in all, they do their job excellently.

The days of these little household helpers wandering disoriented around your home and bumping into all your furniture are well and truly gone.

Whatever your floor type: A good robot hoover is a true all-rounder. You’ll be surprised how powerful the current top models have become.

And one thing is for sure: your home will be vacuumed much more often than if you had to do it yourself.

This automatically ensures a cleaner home. 👏

We use our little robot vacuum cleaner at least every other day.

Mopping ability, self-emptying station, air freshener - these household helpers are true "all-rounders"

Modern robot vacuums are constantly evolving to become true all-rounders (in addition to doing the vacuuming):

  • Mopping capabilities 🧺
  • Self-emptying stations
  • Air fresheners 🌺

These are just a few of the extra functions you’ll find in the best robot vacuums that make household management even easier.

Affordable options: robot vacuums for every budget

If you can live without the high-tech features, then there’s no need to spend a lot of money on a decent robot vacuum cleaner.

High-performing models are now available at reasonable prices.

A small household helper will save you a lot of work and, above all, time. So these devices are truly a worthwhile investment.

Disadvantages

But as so often is the case in life, not all that glitters is gold. Robot vacuum cleaners also have their weaknesses.

Let’s take a look at a few of these disadvantages below.

Low capacity of dust containers

The capacity of the mobile dust bin is usually quite small (400-500 ml). This means you’ll constantly have to empty the robot at regular intervals.

Mobile dust bin of a robot vacuum cleaner is emptied by hand over a rubbish bin.

Premium suppliers such as iRobot, Ecovacs and Roborock are equipped with a self-emptying ability. This ensures that the mobile dust container is emptied automatically.

Small objects lying around

Small objects lying around (e.g. cables, socks, shoelaces, etc.) can cause the robot vacuum cleaner brush to become blocked.

Meaning you would have to rush to the rescue and free your little household helper any time it stumbled across your belongings on the floor.

So it’s best to put all these small objects away before the cleaning session begins.

P.S.: You’ll also have to face this struggle if you use a conventional hoover.

That being said, manufacturers are also aware of this challenge.

Robot vacuum cleaners are gradually being developed with new technologies that independently detect and avoid flat obstacles.

Long-pile carpets

There isn’t a robot vacuum cleaner out there that doesn’t have problems with very high pile, shaggy carpets. The main brush gets caught in the long carpet fibres.

Therefore, we advise you to create a "no-go zone" around carpets like these. Then they will be left out of the cleaning session.

That being said, modern robot vacuum cleaners are perfectly capable when it comes to low and medium-pile carpets.

The cleaning results produced in our tests have been super impressive in these situations.

Robot vacuum and mop combos

The concept behind robot vacuums with mopping capabilities is so simple... yet so ingenious at the same time.

In addition to dust boxes, they also come equipped with water tanks. This way, your floors can be both vacuumed and also mopped with a damp cloth. 🧺

Water tank and mop cloth of a robot vacuum cleaner lie behind the device.

The good news is that the built-in mops have now become established as the "standard".

So it's no surprise that 5 out of 6 of our best robot vacuum cleaners feature mops.

Now for the big question: How effective is the mopping ability of robot vacuum-mops? 🧐

Our experiences have made one thing clear: robot vacuum-mops can not (yet) entirely replace manually mopping.

But the results are still impressive. Mopping floors removes additional light dirt, dust residues and light stains.

A vacuum-mop robot vacuums and mops the floor at the same time.

Your home feels a little bit cleaner and fresher.

But still: The focus of 2-in-1 devices is clearly still on the vacuuming ability. Mopping is a nice bonus feature that we’re happy to benefit from.

And let's not forget: The latest robot vacuum-mops use innovative new features that significantly improve the mopping performance. These include:

  • Vibrating mop heads that replicate "scrubbing" action
  • Special mopping modes: The robot mop will move slower and provide a deep clean
  • Different water flow levels
  • Heavier weight and special pressure mechanisms to provide more contact pressure between the mop and the floor

And if you're looking for more tips and tricks to improve the mopping performance of your combo robot, check out the Tips and Tricks chapter in our review of robot vacuum-mop combos.

We’ve been using a robot vacuum-mop for years now, and we couldn’t live without it.

Below you will find the best robot vacuum-mop hybrids. 👇

Robot vacuums with self-emptying stations

Self-emptying stations are another very popular feature.

And rightly so.

They save you a lot of effort and automate the cleaning process a great deal more.

How does an emptying base work?

As soon as the robotic hoover has finished cleaning, the charging dock / emptying base is activated.

The entire contents of the robot’s mobile dust container are vacuumed out once it enters the base.

Functionality of the suction station of a robot vacuum cleaner is shown.

The dirt is stored in a large dust bag (located in the emptying station).

Advantage of a self-emptying station

The most frequent maintenance task with a robot vacuum cleaner is (regularly) emptying it.

Thanks to auto-empty stations, this task is a thing of the past.

The only thing you still have to do: Empty the dust bag in the extraction station every 2-3 months (depending on how dirty your home is).

Dust bag is replaced in the self-emptying station.

Another positive effect: contact with harmful household dust is completely avoided.

This makes self-emptying stations an absolute must-have for allergy-sufferers.

You can find a compilation of the best models below. 👇

Which robot hoover is best for pet owners?

Many robotic vacuum cleaners have difficulties with hair. Hairs get tangled around the main brush and have to be removed manually.

That’s why many brands include a small cleaning tool as part of your order. This tool can help remove tangled hairs in no time at all.

Hair is removed from the main brush of a robot vacuum cleaner using the cleaning tool.

Other models include special nozzles specifically for tackling hair (e.g. Ecovacs Deebot OZMO 950). This attachment does not have a brush. This means that hair won’t have anything to wrap around and will be guided directly towards the suction opening.

Attachment without cleaning brush is attached to a robot vacuum cleaner.

Alternatively, some models feature a rubber brush (e.g. Roborock S7 or iRobot Roomba i7). The big advantage here is that hair won’t get tangled in the bristles of a rubber brush, meaning maintenance is reduced enormously.

Hair is removed from a rubber brush.

We have dedicated an entire article to the topic of robot vacuum cleaners for pet hair (and human hair 👩). You’ll find everything you need to know there.

We’ve rounded-up a number of robot vacuums that are best suited for households with pets:

Which robotic vacuums are suitable for allergy sufferers?

Allergy sufferers are all too familiar with watering eyes and runny noses. 🤧

Clean, freshly mopped floors contribute significantly to greater well-being in households with allergies.

And who is best suited to this task? That's right: a good robot vacuum-mop combo!

P. S.: You can find more information on the topic of robot hoovers for allergy sufferers in our detailed review.

But robo-vacs must meet some basic requirements to be considered suitable for allergy sufferers. The most important are: HEPA filter, mopping ability, timer function and self-emptying station.

Why these properties are so fundamentally important for allergy sufferers is explained below. 👇

HEPA filter

HEPA filters are a core feature of a robot vacuum cleaner for allergy sufferers.

They filter out the smallest pollutants (and allergens) from the air.

This means they don’t get inhaled, avoiding the onslaught of typical allergy symptoms.

The cleaning process of the air by a HEPA filter in a robot vacuum cleaner is illustrated.

Mopping ability

This is another feature that should not be missing in a robot vacuum cleaner for allergy sufferers.

Mopping removes any remaining dirt from your floors (e.g. dust, simple stains, etc.).

A dirty mop of a suction-mop robot is being held.

This way, your home will be even cleaner.

As we know, the formula for allergy sufferers is simple: more cleanliness = fewer allergy symptoms = better well-being. 👍

Timer function

The act of vacuuming itself can trigger severe allergy symptoms in sufferers.

This is mainly due to the fact that the dust (i.e. allergens) is stirred up during cleaning... and ultimately inhaled.

The result: Watery eyes. Runny nose. Discomfort.

This does not have to be the case.

Simply set your robot hoover to clean your home on fixed days and/or times.

Preferably in your absence.

This allows the whirled-up dust to have a chance to settle before you come home, meaning it’s not inhaled, and the allergy symptoms do not occur.

A self-emptying station

A "luxury feature" for most of us. But absolutely necessary for allergy sufferers.

The big advantage: the mobile dustbin is emptied automatically.

All you need to do is replace the large dust bag in the base station every 2-3 months.

This way, contact with harmful (allergenic) house dust is completely avoided.

Which robot hoover can cross doorways most easily?

First of all, there’s no need to panic: Most robot vacuum cleaners can overcome obstacles of 1.8 to 2 cm without any problems.

So ordinary doorsteps are not a major challenge for a modern robot vacuum cleaner.

A vacuum robot overcomes a doorstep.

But what do you do if you live in an older house with higher thresholds?

Special doorstep ramps or transition strips are a great solution. These can also be used to help robots cross higher thresholds.

A robot vacuum cleaner crosses a doorstep with the aid of a doorstep ramp.

You can find more about the topic here: "The best robot vacuum cleaners for high thresholds."

Robot vacuum cleaner for multiple floors

Robotic hoovers cannot yet fly or climb stairs. 🚀

But you can still use the household helpers in multi-storey houses.

The most important feature here is: the robot vacuum cleaners must be able to create and save multiple maps (for multiple floors).

Multiple maps can be stored in the mobile phone app of a robot vacuum cleaner.
© Ecovacs Robotics

With this feature included, nothing stands in the way of using a robot vacuum in a multi-storey home.

You can find further information in our comprehensive guide on buying a robot vacuum cleaner for multiple floors.

Can robot vacuum cleaners climb stairs?

No, robot vacuum cleaners do not have the climbing ability for stairs cleaning. To clean your stairs, we recommend using a cordless vacuum cleaner. There are even options with built-in mopping ability. You can check out our review of the best models here.

Robot vacuum cleaner for carpets

Hardwood floors are no great obstacle for the most powerful robot vacuum cleaners.

The cleaning performances in our tests have been impressive.

Carpets, on the other hand, are more of a challenge for the little household helpers.

You can find all the details of our tests in our review, the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaners for Carpets.

On both short and long-pile carpets, many robot hoovers are capable of delivering excellent results.

When it comes to super shaggy carpets, however, even the best robot hoovers won’t do. In this case, we recommend a powerful cordless hoover.

We’ve tested the best cordless vacuum cleaners and laid out the best options for you in our review. This will give you some inspiration! 💡

Systematic navigation is a must!

Outside of cleaning performance, quick, systematic navigation is the most important feature of a robot vacuum cleaner.

Because if it wanders around your home for hours, bumping into all the furniture or even leaving out rooms, then the robot vacuum cleaner is nothing more than an expensive, useless "toy".

Therefore, our advice is to go for a robot hoover with an "efficient" navigation method.

This means: Avoid vacuum robots that rely on bounce or gyro navigation.

But which navigation systems are the most efficient?

Laser navigation

Currently, the best navigation method for robot vacuum cleaners is laser navigation.

The term Lidar navigation technology (Light detection and ranging) is often used to refer to this navigation method.

So it's no surprise that >90% of the best robot vacuum cleaners on the market rely on this technology.

The way it works is quite simple: a Laser Distance Sensor (LDS sensor) scans the surroundings, normally from the laser tower on top of the device.

Laser navigation of a robot vacuum cleaner.
© Ecovacs Robotics

This creates a detailed floor plan of your home. The robot vacuum cleaner will then always know where it is and where it wants to go.

Your floors will be cleaned in a quick, seamless, systematic manner. 👍

Which robot vacuum cleaner with laser navigation is the best?

Models from Roborock but also from Ecovacs have always really impressed us in our navigation testing.

For our 80 m² flat (approx. 40 m² cleaning area), cleaning takes around 40 minutes on average. These models didn’t leave out any rooms or areas. ✔

So we recommend these laser navigation models wholeheartedly:

Camera-based navigation

An alternative to laser navigation is navigation with the aid of a camera.

Camera-based navigation of a robot vacuum cleaner.
© iRobot

This method is rather rare.

And there is a reason for this: The system has some disadvantages.

For one thing, navigation is quite slow. On the other hand, good lighting conditions are required for optimal navigation.

Which is the best robot vacuum cleaner with a camera?

The robot pioneer from America, iRobot, relies on camera-based navigation.

We have tested the iRobot Roomba i7. Navigation worked quite well in practice. The iRobot Roomba i7 is also impressive in itself. You can read more about the device in our iRobot Roomba i7 review.

Automatic obstacle detection

Automatic obstacle detection is currently the "latest thing" on the robot vacuum cleaner market.

Flat objects (< 10 cm) are usually overlooked by robot vacuums. So the little household helpers often get caught on phone chargers or socks.

So it is advisable to clear away any objects lying around (cables, socks, shoelaces, etc.) before starting to clean with robot vacuum cleaners that don’t feature automatic obstacle detection.

Robot hoovers with "object recognition" solve this problem by themselves. With the help of an additional camera or laser, the floor is scanned for objects lying around.

Camera-based obstacle detection technology of a robot vacuum cleaner.
Camera Technology © Ecovacs Robotics
Laser-based obstacle detection technology of a robot vacuum cleaner.
Cross-Laser Technology © Ecovacs Robotics

These objects can thus be spotted and avoided independently.

These kinds of robot vacuums make particular sense for larger households with pets/children or for less organised households.

These are the best models with obstacle detection: 👇

Suction power

Is it true that robots with higher suction power (or higher Pa. readings) are always better than ones with low suction power?

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple.

Robot hoovers with greater pick-up power do not necessarily achieve the best cleaning results.

Muscles alone are just not enough. 💪

The vacuuming performance depends on many other factors outside of powerful suction alone. The following questions are important here:

  • How well is the main brush incorporated?
  • What’s the quality of the main brush like?
  • Where is the suction opening located? How well does the side brush do its job?
  • How does the robot perform on hard floors (laminate, parquet, tiles)?
  • What's the suction performance like on short/long-pile carpets?
  • How good is the cleaning performance for light, heavy, coarse and fine dirt?
  • Does the vacuum cleaner perform well in corners and along edges?
  • What is the capacity of the mobile dust bin?
  • Does the robot vacuum cleaner have a HEPA filter (highly recommended, especially for allergy sufferers)?

We look at all these points in detail when carrying out our reviews. Cleaning performance is a decisive factor in our evaluation of robot vacuum cleaners.

Battery life - runtime is important

Robot vacuums vary wildly in terms of battery life, too.

Battery life, and thus how long your robot can clean for at once, differs depending on the model (and the selected suction power setting).

Please also note that the size of the area to be cleaned is normally much smaller than the size of the room itself. Furniture and furnishings reduce the suction area enormously (by about half).

The charging time of the battery should also be taken into account.

Another important feature (especially for larger living spaces) is the "recharge and resume" function.

This function allows the robotic hoover to return to the docking station automatically to charge its battery (in case it runs out in the middle of a cleaning trip) and will then return to the exact spot where it stopped vacuuming before.

Even larger living areas can be cleaned without you needing to lift a finger with this feature.

Our test winners have runtimes of several hours. An area of between 100 - 200 m² can be tackled in this amount of time.

Volume

Let’s not kid ourselves, the humming of a hoover isn’t quite as pleasant as the sound of birds chirping in the morning. 🐤

But there’s also a lot of variance in the volume of different robot vacuum cleaners.

Many models allow you to select different suction levels. Everything from "quiet mode" to "maximum suction power" is available.

Volume decibel scale.

A volume of 50 - 60 decibels (dB.) is generally what you’re after from a robot vacuum cleaner. At this volume, you can still have a conversation in the same room.

But let's be honest: the purpose of a robot vacuum cleaner is to keep your home tidy when you’re not around. Right?

So although the volume is a relevant factor to consider, it’s less weighted in our tests for this reason.

Which robot vacuum cleaners are particularly quiet?

In general, Ecovacs models are particularly quiet robot vacuums. So we recommend these models if you’re looking for some quieter options:

Mobile phone app and voice control

Mobile app

Having become a standard in recent years, almost every modern robot vacuum cleaner can also be operated using a smartphone app via Wifi connectivity.

A mobile phone app for robot vacuums is shown.

But these can also vary greatly. A good robot vacuum cleaner app should have the following qualities:

  • clear and easy to use,
  • and numerous useful functions.

Ease of use sounds trivial at first, but in practice it’s not so common: Unclear menu navigation, poor translation and app crashes are some examples of qualities that make using apps quite difficult.

And when it comes to the range of functions, the wheat is quickly separated from the chaff.

Some apps offer an almost unmanageable range of features, while others offer a mere handful.

Balance is crucial here.

But some functions are simply so important that no robot vacuum app should be lacking in them.

Some examples of these would be:

  • Mapping
  • Remote app control (e.g. start/stop cleaning)
  • No-go zones
  • Individual room/spot cleaning
  • Cleaning schedules
  • Choosing cleaning modes
  • Selecting the water flow level
  • Insight into cleaning protocols and statistics

The Smart Home Fox team always tests the mobile app very thoroughly. In our experience, a good mobile phone app is a decisive factor for the quality of a robot vacuum cleaner.

Voice control

Another feature we’re quite fond of is voice control.

Alexa and Google Assistant are usually supported.

Alexa voice commands for the Ecovacs Deebot robots.
Example of voice commands for an Ecovacs robot vacuum cleaner .

A robot vacuum cleaner with voice control simply has a certain charm:

  • "Alexa, start the vacuum" or
  • "Alexa, tell the robot vacuum to clean the kitchen".

We regularly use Amazon Alexa voice assistant to operate our Roborock S5 Max. You quickly get used to the luxury. 😊

Size and quality of workmanship

Will your chosen robot vacuum actually fit under your bed?

The dimensions of a robot vacuum cleaner (height, length, width) are very important.

How annoying would it be if the robot vacuum cleaner couldn't get under your bed because of a few measly centimetres? As you know, there’s normally a lot of dirt hiding under there.

We always recommend measuring the essential areas in your home before you buy. Then you can be sure that you won't be in for a nasty surprise.

A robot vacuum cleaner should be made with high quality workmanship. Nothing should rattle or break easily.

And of course, the aesthetic of the little household helper should simply match your taste (shape, design, colour).

A robot vacuum cleaner is held up to see.

Many of the current top models on the market are produced by Chinese manufacturers (e.g. Roborock or Ecovacs).

We’ve found this to be a good thing. Chinese models have an extremely high level of quality. It’s no coincidence that our top models are predominantly made by Chinese manufacturers.

Recommended brands

Countless brands and manufacturers are now available on the market.

However, only a handful of brands have proven that they’re able to produce good-quality products with adequate service.

Here are our top 3:

It’s also no surprise that these are precisely the brands that tend to achieve the top ratings in our tests.

Over the last few years, they’ve spearheaded development in the market with more and more innovative ideas.

These hoovers are characterised above all by their outstanding quality, technology and cleaning performance.

Roborock

This manufacturer from China is one of the top players in the robot vacuum cleaner market. The Chinese technology giant "Xiaomi" also has a stake in Roborock. As a subsidiary of Xiaomi, Roborock benefits from Xiaomi's size, expertise and financial stability.

Nevertheless, Roborock states that they are basically operating as a separate company (and brand) in the market.

And this is also a good thing. Because this means Roborock isn’t inhibited by Xiaomi's inertia and can maintain its usual market presence, flexibility and dynamism.

The result: Roborock has consistently delivered top quality products with the latest premium features for years.

Ecovacs

Ecovacs is a company that has made a name for itself in the robot vacuum cleaner industry.

And this did not happen overnight. The Chinese manufacturer has been supplying the market with top models for several years. Time and again, Ecovacs has been able to make a splash in the market with innovative functions (most recently, for example, with the vibrating mop feature).

In line with the company's vision "a robot for every family", Ecovacs strives to make your everyday life a little easier with smart household robots.

iRobot

iRobot is a pioneer in the world of robot vacuums. The Roomba devices were the first models to perform well in everyday homes. Thus, the idea of robot vacuums became more accessible.

The main focus of the company is on the development and production of autonomous robot vacuum cleaners for home use. In addition to robotic vacuums, the American manufacturer's product range also includes robotic mops and robot lawn mowers.

The products from iRobot are characterised by one thing above all: Quality!

And this usually has its price. Devices from iRobot belong without a doubt to the "luxury sector".

Other brands

In addition to the brands mentioned above, other producers are also starting to step into the spotlight.

Dyson

Dyson cordless vacuums are a household name by now. The hoovers are characterised by excellent quality and innovative design.

What many people don't know is that Dyson has now launched the third generation of its robot vacuum cleaner, the Dyson 360 Heurist.

The jury is still out on this one, but perhaps the best is yet to come.

Eufy

Eufy is a manufacturer of smart home devices. In addition to robot vacuums like the Eufy Robovac L70, the brand's portfolio also includes battery-powered vacuum cleaners like the Eufy by Anker Homevac S11 as well as security cameras.

Eufy RoboVac 15C Max*

Shark

Shark is another leading brand in the UK for robot vacuum cleaners. Often known for offering more affordable options compared to the more expensive competitors (Dyson, iRobot), this American company also produces many other products such as mop robots, upright and cordless vacuums as well as hair stylers.

Shark Robot Vacuum*

Zaco

Zaco* is known for its inexpensive vacuum robots. Some devices can be found on Amazon UK for well under 200 €.

Neato Robotics

Neato is now a veteran of the robot hoover market. The Neato Botvac models of the D-series (buy here on Amazon*) are especially popular in America.

The manufacturer stands out from the competition even visually. The robotic vacuum cleaners have a "D" shape (instead of the usual round look). This allows the devices to shine when cleaning corners and skirting boards in particular.

Which? Robot vacuum reviews

With all this said, we’re not the only ones who are constantly reviewing the performance of robot vacuum cleaners. Independent UK consumer organisation Which? also keep us up to date on their opinions.

Coming in at first place in their robot vacuum reviews is the Dyson 360 Heurist with a score of 77%.

This robot passed all of Which?’s test parameters with flying colours, including cleaning performance, navigation, ease of use and range of features.

Where it fell in the consumer organisation’s eyes was the capacity of its dust bin.

Personally, we weren’t all that impressed with this product’s performance in our testing. There are other models we have found to perform much better. 🤷‍♀️

Which? then awards second and third place to the iRobot Roomba 980 and the Neato Botvac D8 respectively.

Some robots have also been marked as “Great Value” options, such as the Roborock S5 max, which came in at a score of 65%. You can read our review of this little robot here.

However, it must be noted that Which? does not seem to be as up to date with robot vacuum reviews as we would have expected.

Many of our favourite options, such as the Roborock S7 and the Ecovacs X1 OMNI haven’t been reviewed by the organisation.

For this reason, we recommend not blindly following the scores awarded by Which?, as they haven’t always checked out the latest products.

Something we can agree on, however, is that robot vacuum cleaners have come a long way since they first stepped onto the scene, and automation of floor cleaning is really a dream come true.

How do robot vacuum cleaners work?

The idea behind a robot vacuum cleaner is quite simple... and yet ingenious.

These little gadgets move around your home by themselves. Dirt is vacuumed up and stored in a mobile dust bin.

As soon as the entire flat has been cleaned, the robot hoover returns to its charging station by itself. Here it stays (and charges) until you send it off for the next cleaning.

Modern robot vacuums are operated via an app that offers you numerous setting options, functions and statistics. This allows you to conveniently control your household helper while out and about.

Floor cleaning just got so easy. 🎉

So what’s left for you to do, then? That's right, not too much. Just a little maintenance work will need to be done now and again. We'll take a closer look at what exactly needs to be done in the next section. 👇

Maintenance - How do I look after my robot vacuum cleaner?

Your new robot vacuum cleaner does all the floor cleaning for you: reliably, thoroughly and with no complaints. 👏

To keep it that way, you need to perform some maintenance tasks at regular intervals.

On the bright side, the app will send you alerts about upcoming tasks.

Maintenance instructions are shown in a robot vacuum cleaner mobile app.

Emptying the mobile dust container

This is the most common of all maintenance tasks.

You must regularly empty the mobile dust container by hand.

Depending on how dirty your flat is (or how often the robot vacuum cleans the flat), this must be done 1-2 times a week.

The emptying process itself works quite simply and takes no longer than a minute:

  • Remove the dust box.
  • Empty the contents of the box into your bin.
  • Reattach the dust box.
  • And that’s it!

P.S.: If you have a robot vacuum cleaner with a self-emptying station, this step is completely unnecessary. The mobile dust container is emptied automatically with every battery charge.

The only task that remains: Replacing the large dust bag in the extraction station every 2-3 months.

Are you looking for a good robot vacuum cleaner with a self-emptying station? Then take a look at our detailed experience report now.

Removing hair from brushes

Do you have pets? 🐩

Or does someone in your household have long hair? 👩

Then get ready for hair to annoyingly wrap around the brushes of your robot vacuum cleaner.

This is nothing unusual and does not pose a major problem for industrious little robots.

However, you should ensure to remove the tangled hairs regularly. Otherwise, the cleaning performance may suffer.

To make things easier, a special cleaning tool is usually included in the package contents. This makes removing the hair much easier and faster.

Alternatively, you can use scissors or a knife.

Hair is removed from a robot vacuum brush.

The process itself takes no longer than 3 minutes. Depending on your living situation, you should do this once or twice a month.

P.S.: Is your floor covered with hair? There are special vacuum robots with rubber brushes to make tackling hair easier (e.g. Roborock S7 or iRobot Roomba i7+).

The hairs won’t get stuck in these kinds of brushes. This means that maintenance will be much easier for you:

  • Remove the brush.
  • Simply pull out the hair (no need for tools or scissors).
  • And you’re ready to go!

Cleaning the filter

You will be amazed at how much dirt the robot vacuum picks up.

A lot of dirt means hard work for the HEPA filter.

Therefore, it must be cleaned regularly.

The cleaning steps are as follows:

  • Remove the HEPA filter.
  • Tap out the filter vigorously over a dustbin (preferably outdoors).
  • Brush the HEPA filter with the cleaning tool supplied.
  • Optional: Wash the filter under running water. (This is not recommended with every HEPA filter. Please refer to the manufacturer's instructions for use.)
  • Allow the filter to dry for 24 hours.
  • Replace the filter.

The maintenance tasks of a HEPA filter are described.

HEPA filter cleaning usually takes no more than 5 minutes and should be carried out once a month.

Even if you clean a HEPA filter thoroughly, it is still necessary to replace it from time to time.

The filter should be changed every 6-12 months. The replacement period depends on how dirty it has become and is different for each household.

Suitable HEPA filters for your robot can easily be reordered from Amazon*.

Washing out the mobile dust box

Every few months it is worth washing out the mobile dust container.

To do this, rinse it thoroughly under running water. You can then wipe out the inside of the container with a dry cloth.

Now the dust bin must dry. The windowsill is a good spot for this.

Allow container to dry.

After approx. 24 hours, the dust bin will be 100% dry and can be used again.

Cleaning the crash sensors

Crash sensors are located on the underside of your robot hoover.

These ensure that your faithful household helper does not fall down any cliffs (e.g. stairs).

And to keep it that way, you should wipe the sensors with a dry cloth from time to time.

The crash sensors are cleaned with a cloth.

This maintenance step is particularly important, especially if you live in a multi-storey house with "real" cliffs. Make sure you do this at least once a month.

Replacing the side brush / main brush

The side brush or main brush is usually made of bristle hair.

The brushes work quite hard during the daily cleaning.

So, of course, these will have to be replaced at some point.

The app gives you a heads-up to suggest when parts may need to be replaced.

We recommend treating this suggestion as a guideline. When in doubt, taking a closer look will help you decide if the brushes need to be replaced.

If the bristle hairs stick out in all directions and the cleaning performance increasingly decreases, then it is probably time for a replacement.

As a rule, replacement must be carried out once every 2 years under "normal" conditions.

Spare parts can be easily reordered via Amazon*.

Dusting your robot vacuum

Surely the simplest of all maintenance tasks.

Robot hoovers collect a serious amount of dust (especially if it's a black model).

Therefore, we advise you to dust your robot vacuum cleaner once a week with a slightly damp cloth.

How long do robotic hoovers last?

If you treat your robot vacuum cleaner well (and maintain it regularly as described above), then nothing will stand in the way of a long service life. 🙌

Models from top manufacturers in particular (Roborock, Ecovacs and iRobot) produce very high quality products.

Our team has been using some of the models from these brands almost daily for several years. And apart from the replacement of a few wearing parts (HEPA filter, brush), the devices run as they did on day one. 🎉

Purchase and follow-up costs

Last but not least, price is also a decisive factor.

Luckily, you can find robotic hoovers in all price categories.

But we strongly recommend paying attention not only to the price, but to the value for money.

Ask yourself: What do I actually get for the money?

Obviously, we all have to adhere to a certain budget when buying a new robot vacuum cleaner. Nevertheless, the decision is important and you should take your time to consider all aspects...

... Because the purchase of a robot vacuum cleaner should be seen as an investment. The little household helper will accompany you for the next few years and make your life much easier.

So, don't fall into the trap of a false economy!

Buy a robot vacuum cleaner online

We always recommend buying robot vacuum cleaners online.

The price is usually (significantly) cheaper than in brick-and-mortar establishments.

Furthermore, you benefit from the 14-day free return period.

This means you can test your robot vacuum for 2 weeks. If you are dissatisfied, simply return the device to the manufacturer/dealer free of charge. The purchase price will be refunded within a few days.

How do we test robotic vacuum cleaners?

We are always thoroughly inspecting new robot vacuum cleaners. 🧐 And to make sure our tests are comparable, we follow a standardised procedure:

  • Firstly, we research the best / most relevant robotic vacuum cleaners.
  • We then get our hands on the products.
  • Our teams carry out extensive tests ("lab tests" and real "practical tests")
  • We then write our reviews and publish them for our readership free of charge on our Smart Home Fox UK website.

What does the actual robot vacuum cleaner test look like?

We always test robotic vacuums in the same way. This ensures comparability and objectivity.

We carry out the following tests:

Cleaning test on hard floors and carpets

Overview of the cleaning test of a robot vacuum cleaner on hard floor
Hard floor
Overview of the cleaning test of a robot vacuum cleaner on a carpet.
Long pile / short pile carpeting

Then, we look at how cleaning is done in a "real home" over a longer period of time.

Mopping test

If the device is a robot vacuum-mop, we also test and evaluate the mopping performance.

Cleaning test with hair

We distribute human and pet hair and let the robot vacuum clean the area.

Then we see how much of the dispersed hair ends up in the dust bin.

Cleaning test along corners and skirting boards

A lot of dirt tends to accumulate in corners and along skirting boards in particular.

That’s why we closely examine how robot vacuums clean these hard-to-reach places.

Control and operation

This is where we evaluate how the robot vacuum cleaner is operated.

Robot hoovers can usually be controlled with buttons, phone apps, voice control or even by remote control.

The most common and most important control method for modern, Wifi-enabled robot vacuum cleaners is the mobile phone app. 📱

We have a good look at this feature. The most important assessment criteria are:

  • User-friendliness,
  • and functional diversity.
Top cleaning performance is only half the battle. A good mobile phone app is also very important and rounds off the overall package.

Navigation & Driving

The navigation of a robot hoover is one of the most important criteria for cleaning success.

After all, what good is the best cleaning performance if the robot vacuum cleaner takes hours to clean your home? Or even completely leaves out areas or rooms?

Right, not much.

So, make sure to inspect the navigation of a robot vacuum cleaner:

  • What navigation technology does it use?
  • Is a map of the home created and stored?
  • Is the navigation fast, precise and seamless?
  • How does it handle flat / tall obstacles?
  • How does it manoeuvre furniture (e.g. table and chair legs)?

A robot vacuum cleaner’s navigation ability has quite a high weight in our overall evaluation.

Dealing with doorsteps

We take a look at the "climbing performance" of a robot vacuum cleaner.

Most models can handle lower door thresholds with no problems.

But if you live in an older house, this aspect is worth paying special attention to.

Volume Test

We measure the noise produced by a robot vacuum cleaner in our volume test.

The volume of a robot hoover is measured.

If your new household helper will often be cleaning the flat when you’re at home, then it’s worth choosing a quieter model.

Other criteria we look at in our tests:

  • Size and design
  • Package contents
  • And finally, price

The conclusion

In our conclusion, we briefly summarise the results and give our verdict of whether the model is worth buying.

What is a virtual wall?

A virtual wall, or boundary strip, is usually a small device that emits an infrared signal.

A virtual wall device is shown in use.
© iRobot

This prevents the robot vac from entering a certain area in your home.

This allows you to place virtual walls in your home where you do not want the robot hoover to go (e.g. food bowl, children's play area, etc.).

However, this technology is already obsolete. With modern vacuum robots, virtual boundaries or exclusion zones are set up via the mobile phone app.

An exclusion zone is placed around a carpet.

This is much more practical. No physical "virtual walls" need to be placed in the flat.
